Personalized, Structured, and Focused on Results

The PSAT is more than a practice test — it's the gateway to National Merit Scholarships and the foundation for SAT success. Our expert tutors are built for exactly this moment.

Diagnostic-First Approach

We start with a full diagnostic exam that pinpoints your student's strengths and identifies the exact question types costing the most points. That data drives every session — no guesswork, no wasted time.

Prep for the Digital Test

The PSAT is now fully digital and adaptive — meaning the difficulty of each section adjusts based on your student's performance in real time. Our tutors prep students specifically for this format, including timed digital practice that mirrors the actual test experience. No paper-based prep that doesn't reflect the real exam.

Built for the Long Game

PSAT prep with Livius doesn't end on test day. The skills, strategies, and score data your student builds here carry directly into SAT prep — giving them a head start that compounds over time.

Most Students Treat the PSAT as a Throwaway. That's a Costly Mistake.

The PSAT determines National Merit eligibility and sets the trajectory for SAT performance. Without targeted prep, students leave significant opportunity on the table. Here's where most families get caught off guard:

Starting Too Late

Most families realize the PSAT matters after their student has already taken it. Prep that begins in 8th or 9th grade gives students multiple attempts and time to compound improvement before the qualifying junior-year exam.

Not Understanding National Merit Cutoffs

Selection Index cutoffs vary by state and are more competitive than most families expect. Our Academic Directors know exactly what score your student needs in Massachusetts and will build a plan that targets it directly.

Generic Prep That Doesn't Target Gaps

Practice books and online courses treat every student the same. Our 1-on-1 model means every session is built around your student's specific score improvement checklist — not a syllabus designed for the average test-taker.

Missed SAT Foundation

The PSAT and SAT share the same structure and skill set. Students who skip PSAT prep miss the chance to build habits and strategy early — and often spend more time and money catching up during SAT prep later.

A Customized Path to Your Highest PSAT Score

We don't hand students a book and a schedule. Every Livius engagement is built around your student's specific gaps, timeline, and goals.

1

Advising Session

Meet with an experienced Academic Director. Together you'll map out your student's current standing, target score, and the right timeline — whether they're prepping for the first time or improving a previous attempt.

2

Livius Diagnostic Exam

A full-length diagnostic identifies exactly where your student is losing points across Reading, Writing, and Math. Results generate a personalized score improvement checklist that drives every tutoring session.

3

Personalized Tutoring Plan

Your student works 1-on-1 with a hand-matched certified tutor. Regular practice tests and session reports track progress in real time, and the plan adapts as weaknesses shift so momentum never stalls.

Choose the Right Program for Your Student

The PSAT comes in two versions: the PSAT 8/9 for 8th and 9th graders building early skills, and the PSAT/NMSQT for 10th and 11th graders — the version that qualifies students for National Merit Scholarships. We have a program built for both.

Common Questions from Families

These are the questions our Academic Directors hear most often during free consultations about PSAT prep.

Talk to an Advisor
The earlier the better — but it's never too late. Ideally, students begin prep in 8th or 9th grade so they can take the PSAT multiple times before the qualifying junior-year sitting. Even students who start prep 6–8 weeks before the October exam can see meaningful improvement with focused 1-on-1 sessions. An Academic Director can review your student's timeline and build the right plan.
Yes — for two reasons. First, PSAT scores reveal exactly where your student needs to improve before the SAT, making future prep more targeted and efficient. Second, it builds familiarity with College Board test structure and timing under real test conditions. Students who skip it often spend extra time during SAT prep learning things they could have addressed earlier.
Massachusetts is one of the most competitive states for National Merit. The Selection Index cutoff typically falls in the 221–223 range (equivalent to roughly a 1480–1500+ on the SAT), though it shifts slightly each year. Our Academic Directors stay current on Massachusetts-specific cutoffs and will tell you exactly what score your student needs to be in contention.
The Selection Index is the number National Merit uses to rank students — it's not the same as the PSAT score itself. The formula weights Reading and Writing more heavily than Math: take your student's Reading & Writing score, drop the last digit, and double it. Then add the Math score with the last digit dropped. For example: a 680 in Reading & Writing and a 660 in Math gives (68 × 2) + 66 = 202. Massachusetts Semifinalist cutoffs typically require a Selection Index of around 221–223. Our Academic Directors can walk you through exactly where your student stands and what it would take to get there.
The PSAT is slightly shorter and scored on a 320–1520 scale (vs. 400–1600 for the SAT), but the structure, question types, and skill areas are nearly identical. That's why PSAT prep with Livius also builds a strong foundation for SAT performance — the work doesn't go to waste.
We offer in-center sessions at our Newton and Lexington locations, fully online sessions, and hybrid arrangements. All three formats use the same certified tutors, the same curriculum, and the same diagnostic process — your student gets the same quality of prep regardless of format.
