Beck Saine (he/they) is a recent graduate of Harvard College, where he concentrated in Earth & Planetary Sciences. A lifelong learner, Beck’s passions lie in STEM, the arts, and languages (Spanish and Japanese). His educational philosophy stems from his upbringing in an adaptive Montessori environment, allowing students to learn at their own pace while also helping them achieve short-term goals for testing and college admissions. In high school, he received a score of 5 on nine AP tests (U.S. History, U.S. Government, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Physics C: Mechanics, Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism, English Literature, English Language, and Spanish Language) and became a National Merit Semifinalist. He was thrilled to teach organic chemistry labs and marine geochemistry during college, alongside volunteer test prep tutoring. His undergraduate curriculum included subjects such as: chemistry, physics, mathematics, climate science, Earth history, environmental philosophy, marine microbiology, and stable isotope geochemistry. He also conducted a pilot study to explore the Dunning-Kruger effect (the metacognitive perception of one’s expertise in a subject) for students’ mental models of climate systems. Beck recently took the GRE for his graduate school applications in biogeochemistry and oceanography. He hopes to study the co-evolution of ecology and climate over Earth’s history in order to more accurately predict the biological response to modern climate change. Outside of academics, Beck enjoys singing, piano, baking, the Eurovision Song Contest, and RuPaul’s Drag Race.
