Frequently Asked Questions About the SAT Test (FAQs)

What is the SAT Exam?

The SAT is a standardized test taken by high school juniors and seniors that is used for college admissions in the United States. Its purpose is to measure a student’s readiness for college. The test provides college admissions officers with a data point that can be used to compare all applicants alongside their high school GPAs, letters of recommendations, extracurricular activities, interviews and personal essays.

How is the SAT different from the ACT?

The SAT and ACT tests differ slightly in layout and content. Both cover math, reading, writing and data interpretation and both have an optional essay. The SAT does not have a Science section; the ACT does. The SAT has “with calculator” and “without calculator” Math sections; the ACT allows a calculator to be used throughout its Math section. The SAT Writing and Language section contains fewer questions than the ACT English section.

Should I Take the SAT or the ACT?

Both the SAT and ACT are accepted by every college in America. There is no advantage to taking one test over the other, nor is one “easier” or “harder,” but taking the test that best fits their skills and abilities will help students earn the highest scores.

The best way to decide which test is best for you is to take Livius Prep’s ACT vs. SAT Comparison Test which compresses all components of the ACT and the SAT into a single test. It is accompanied by a highly detailed diagnostic report that provides a recommendation on which test is more likely to maximize your test scores.
