The Reading Portion of the SAT
The Reading/Language portion of the SAT accounts for half of the SAT, so the Reading part of that half is a full 25% of the overall SAT score. It measures your ability to read, analyze, apply, and evaluate information rather than being able to memorize facts.
Information about the SAT Reading Test
The reading portion of the SAT requires students to answer multiple choice questions based upon reading passages. Passages might be paired with additional passages or include informative graphs. The content itself will include the answers to all of the questions; existing knowledge is never required to answer.
As you take the reading portion of the SAT, you’ll have to answer a variety of question types. These questions include direct information as well as implications based upon the text.
The specific types of passages read while taking the SAT include:
- One piece of literature
- One piece of primary historical evidence
- An information passage about a social sciences topic
- Two pieces regarding concepts involved with the biological or physical sciences
Students demonstrate several skills within the Reading exam. From the ability to identify supportive evidence to recognition of the author’s purpose, evaluation of graphics, understanding of context clues, and analysis of the effect of tone, several reading skills that will be used in a college setting are measured on the SAT.
