The Relationship of the PSAT to the SAT
The PSAT is an examination cosponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) and the College Board. The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) is also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) and serves two purposes: preparation for the SAT and identifying candidates to become National Merit Scholars.
Differences between the PSAT and SAT:
- The scale scores
- Level of difficulty
- Number of questions
When high school juniors score in the top 1% of the PSAT, they qualify as Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program where they can compete for scholarship money and prestigious awards.
Should You Take the PSAT?
Sophomores and juniors in high school typically take the PSAT. This choice can serve three separate purposes. The first is to become accustomed to the layout and content of the SAT; the second is to compete for a National Merit Scholar honor and scholarship money; and the third is for sophomores to prepare to take the PSAT the next year to compete for National Merit honors.
Preparation for the PSAT
The program at Livius Prep is meant to help students identify points of improvement and points of strength in order to create a customized course of preparation for the individual student who plans to take the PSAT.
What to Expect from the PSAT
- Reading
- Writing
- Math
- No calculator section
- Approved calculator allowed section
The PSAT questions are mostly multiple choice except for 17% of the math section. The eight math questions that aren’t multiple choice answers require students to answer in writing.
PSAT Scoring
The score range for the PSAT extends from 320-1520, calculated in 10 point increments. The PSAT score doesn’t have any bearing on college admission, but it is used to earn scholarship funds and to compete for the honor of National Merit Scholar.
Your score can be helpful as a predictor of your future SAT score as well, providing a glimpse into a realistic expectation of the scope of preparation you’ll need to pursue.
