Myths About the SAT and ACT

Myth #1: Colleges prefer one test over the other.

Colleges have no preference. You can apply to the same schools, regardless of which test you decide to take, but your scores will be one of the top factors that influence their college admissions decisions. The tests provide admissions officers with a data point they can use to compare you with other applicants alongside your high school GPA, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, interview and personal essay. Many students take both tests; if they do poorly on one, they may do better on the other.

Myth #2: The ACT is easier than the SAT.

The ACT is not “easier” or “harder” than the SAT, but taking the test that best fits your skills and abilities will help you earn the highest scores. The best way to decide which test you prefer is to take the Livius Prep ACT Actual Condition Practice Test and SAT Actual Condition Practice Test. These are comprehensive and multifaceted practice exams that help students become completely prepared for whatever testing challenges lay ahead.

Myth #3: You should not take the SAT or ACT more than once.

Students can take the SAT as many times as they want and the ACT up to 12 times. Most students actually improve their scores when they retake the test, so taking it multiple times can be a big advantage. If you were sick, tired, or stressed out the first time, or did not do as well as you hoped, you can retake the test and try for a higher score. We ordinarily don’t recommend taking the test more than three times.
