The ACT Breakdown

The ACT consists of four basic sections – English, Math, Reading, and Science Reasoning – with the option of a Focused Writing portion addition. Performing well on this test requires knowledge as well as test-taking strategies for addressing the question types.

The English portion of the test consists of 75 questions and 45 minutes to answer them. The test will measure language usage, mechanics, and rhetorical skills.

The Math portion of the test consists of 60 questions and 60 minutes for answers. This section will measure pre-algebra, basic and intermediate algebra, coordinate and plane geometry, and trigonometry.

The Reading portion of the ACT consists of 40 questions and provides 35 minutes for answers. The reading passages consist of social studies, natural sciences, literary narrative/prose fiction, and humanities.

The Science Reasoning portion of the exam has 40 questions, and students are given 35 minutes to respond. This portion evaluates data analysis, experimental results, and conflicting viewpoints.

The writing portion is optional. During this portion, students will have 40 minutes to compose a written explanation of a personal position.

Taking the ACT is fairly stressful because of the speed needed to answer all of the questions. In addition to familiarity with the material, students will need to work toward developing test-taking stamina and working at a consistent speed.

The ACT Score

Don’t expect the typical 100-point score range seen on weekly tests. The ACT has a 36-point scale. The sections are scored on this scale and then averaged to produce a composite score, which is your official ACT exam score. Many schools are allowing students to use a Super Score, which is a composite of all the best section scores when a student has taken the ACT more than once.
